Amy Balkin is a San Francisco-based artist who combines cross-disciplinary research and social critique to generate bold and innovative ways of conceiving a shared physical commons outside existing legal and discursive systems. Balkin mixes conceptual art, performative interventions, online media, historical research, and political activisms to present how humans create, interact with, and impact social and material landscapes. Her projects include clean-air park "Public Smog," "This is the Public Domain", an effort to create a permanent international commons, and the collaboration "Invisible-5", an environmental justice audio tour of California’s I-5 freeway corridor. Her work has been included in "Art in the Anthropocene" (Davis and Turpin, 2015) and "Critical Landscapes: Art, Space, Politics" (Scott and Swenson, 2015).
